50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

48. The Woman In Black

Get Out Daniel Kaluuya
Momentum Pictures/ CBS Films

Plot: A young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe, in one of his first roles post-Harry Potter) goes to an abandoned house to settle a deceased woman's financial affairs, but soon finds himself targeted by a vengeful specter.

Much like the aforementioned Insidious, The Woman in Black was an incredibly satisfying watch because, unlike most studio horror films of the time, it was actually scary. Like, really, really scary.

Although it's not the most subtle or character-driven of horror films, The Woman in Black is still a jolly good horror yarn. A refreshingly traditional ghost story that prioritizes scares over gore, Woman in Black smartly combines an array of brilliant jump scares with an oppressive atmosphere of English bleakness, while it's also headlined by one of the finest villains in any modern horror film. All in all, smashing stuff.

Fun fact: Adrian Rawlins, the actor who plays Harry Potter's father, was actually the lead in the 1980s TV adaptation of the novel. He had a supporting part in this movie's terrible 2015 sequel.
