50 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century
8. The Others
Plot: A mother (Nicole Kidman) living in a darkened house with her two children, who are susceptible to light, starts to believe the house is haunted by ghosts.
The Others was another one of those anomaly horror films from the early 2000s. Even though most of the genre's output at this time was fairly substandard, every now and again something exceptional would come along. This Spanish horror drama (shot in the English language) is one such case.
All in all, The Others is completely outstanding. The story, the direction, the performances (especially from a rarely-better Nicole Kidman), the atmosphere, the scares - everything about this movie is beautifully and brilliantly put-together. Plus, like many of the other great 21st century horror films, this works so well because its heart-in-mouth scares are accompanied by a legitimately great narrative.
It also has one of the best plot twists of all time, so there's that too.
