The car-chase scene in The French Connection is probably the most known of its kind.. It is a great scene, mainly because it doesnt overdo it; the driver, Doyle, played by Gene Hackman does not drive the broken down and shaggy car like some sort of professional driver. Madness. Madness. The same two words repeating to end a ambiance of scale and terror. It is a misunderstood quote; I see it as more of a satirical statement, whereas others feel it is making light to the issues it raises, even if the predeceasing scenes do not convey that message. So, the greatness of it lies in its contradiction? Perhaps. Or perhaps it lies in the delivery. Or perhaps it lies in the finale value. Or perhaps it lies in a lot of things.
