6. Singin' In The Rain - Singin' In The Rain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1ZYhVpdXbQ Maybe this should have been higher on the list. A lot of people would probably put it at the top, and with good reason: this is probably the most famous musical scene in the history of cinema. People who hate musicals have seen Gene Kelly dancing down the street in the rain, so blindly in love that he doesn't even care that he's getting soaked by the weather. It's a testament to his ability as a dancer that he performed this entire number while suffering a 101 degree fever. He even ad-libbed most of the performance, as it hadn't been completely blocked out by the time he did the take, just starting and ending positions were nailed down. It's a magical number, and one that will live on after most other films from this era are forgotten. 5. I Dreamed A Dream - Les Miserables
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86lczf7Bou8 There are moments in Les Miserables when the decision to perform all the songs live seems to have been a little bit overly ambitious, where some of the actors who were not classically trained singers would have benefited from a studio setting and several takes to get it right. I Dreamed a Dream is not one of those moments. An emaciated, hopeless Anne Hathaway is tightly framed by the unsympathetic camera, and she pours every ounce of herself into the performance. Its not pretty, but its heart-wrenching and certainly worthy of the Best Actress Oscar it won Hathaway.
