50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
37. Elijah Wood As Matt Buckner - Green Street
In 2005, Green Street released as a story revolving around football hooliganism in the UK. There are plenty of actors who would slot perfectly into such a project, with Geoff Bell, Leo Gregory, and even Charlie Hunnam as prime examples, so long as you can ignore the latter's Cockney attempts.
One who didn't fit quite so well here was Elijah Wood. Yes, it was part of the narrative that he wasn't supposed to fit in to begin with, but even as he delved deeper into the GSE, it didn't feel right.
Actors will often become known for one thing above many more, and while it's important that audiences see the character rather than the actor, there is also some onus on the casting department to avoid what happened here. Throughout the entire thing, as Matt Buckner became more and more involved and desensitised to the violence, it was hard to see past Frodo Baggins in a football scrap.
Wood has played roles far more different than his Lord of the Rings turn, and as Kevin in Sin City, he was just the right amount of creepy, but surely there must have been someone who could play both the American fish out of water and the die hard West Ham hooligan in equal measure.
