50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast
25. Russell Crowe As Javert - Les Misérables
It is important when casting a film to pair a character with an actor who can do exactly what they need to do. Not every actor can do everything, as this list shows, but it is important for filmmakers to know what they have to work with going in.
Of course, there are certain nuances to the craft that actors can surprise you with, but one of the more black and white boxes that sometimes needs checking is simply, can they sing, yes or no? If no, then don't put them into a role where they need to sing. Easy, right?
Enter Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Misérables. As the policeman on a quest to bring Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) to justice, there was nothing wrong with this performance per se. However, like with Emma Watson earlier in the list, he simply didn't have the pipes to do what such a role needed of him.
In fairness, he wasn't a terrible singer, but with the unavoidable comparisons to the likes of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, he was always going to stick out like a sore thumb. With the songs naturally being such an important part of the movie, this needed to be somebody else.
