50 Huge Movie Characters That Were Completely Miscast

26. Matthew McConaughey & Idris Elba As Walter & Roland - The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower was a weird project that had so much potential, but was seemingly too confused about exactly what it wanted to be. It borrowed from multiple novels in Stephen King's eight-book series, while also acting as something of a continuation of those events, while trying to cram everything into a tight 90 minutes.

There was a lot that needed to be done to turn the film into the blockbuster it could have been, one of the simplest being the casting. Matthew McConaughey played Walter, aka the Man in Black, while Idris Elba played Roland, aka the Gunslinger, and neither were right for the role.

The two men were obviously huge names to get in for the film, and though neither exactly set the world alight with their performances, they weren't as bad as some on this list. The issue here is that they both would have been so much better suited to each other's roles.

McConaughey would have fit the bill as the badass, lone wandering cowboy like a glove, while his own role of the villainous Man in Black would have been made better by Elba, who has more of a history in bringing great villains to life. Yes, the two should have faced off against each other in The Dark Tower, but each on the other side of the fence.
