For anyone who has ever liked any action movie ever, the news that Shane Black is back in the directing seat three years after making the excellent Iron Man 3 should be mighty exciting. He's nostalgic in all the right ways (there's only so much enjoyment to be had in ultra-modern gritty actioners), and what he can do with a script is like pornography to script writers.

As if ticking off a magic formula for noirs, The Good Guys is a period flick (the '70s rather than earlier) about a down-on-his-luck PI, his enforcer and a missing dame. Tie in a murder and a conspiracy that goes to the very top, and the top level of the cast being populated by Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and you've got one of the most exciting action movies of the year.
