35. Mary Poppins Returns

2018 In Film
Disney

After a string of live-action-remake successes, Disney knows more than anything right now that established brands are the way forward for global dominance. That's partly why they've just bought Fox's prime properties, and it's also why they'll continue to look to expanding on their past projects into the foreseeable future.

One of the best parts of that trend is that the studio decided not to remake Mary Poppins as part of the rush to redo everything. Instead, they've given the charming original a belated sequel, starring the delightful team of Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda alongside a hugely talented cast also including Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Colin Firth and of course, Dick Van Dyke.

It all sounds like yet another winning slice of Anglophilia with a cast that really can't fail and a brand that has only recently been buoyed by the delightful Saving Mr Banks. Expect a blend of sadness, pathos and good-old fashioned sugar to make the medicine go down.
