31. You Were Never Really Here

You can't really set your watch by Lynne Ramsay movies, but you're at least assured of quality and impact when they do come out, which is good news for anyone who's been waiting to see the Scottish director's follow-up to the incendiary We Need To Talk About Kevin.

You Were Never Really Here has already been marked as quality by those who've seen it on the festival circuit, and while it somewhat defies description (it's something akin to a violent tone poem about a hitman (Joaquin Phoenix) charged with saving a 14-year-old girl (Ekaterina Samsonov) from a child-prostitution ring), that's a good start.

The cast is great (and Phoenix is never better than when he's playing such darkly energetic figures), and the story sounds ripe for some typical Ramsay intensity. And while it might not be a concrete confirmation of quality, but it also received a 7-minute standing ovation after it played in Cannes, so that's something.
