25. A Wrinkle In Time
Since making Selma and the Oscar-worthy documentary 13th, rising talent director Ava DuVernay seems to be heading in an entirely different direction with her adaptation of classic 1962 sci-fi fantasy novel A Wrinkle In Time, which is a source that will require every fibre of her imagination to be plucked.
The plot focuses on a family of young children who travel through dimensions to find their father with the use of a Tesseract - no not that one - visiting stunning, strange new worlds and encountering creatures of unimaginable oddness as they battle a world-ending force of pure evil. If it sounds a little like the His Dark Materials novels, there's good reason. Let's just hope it proves more adaptable.
The cast is excellent, with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Storm Reid top billed, and it's definitely going to be one of the oddest films of the year. Again, if the balance between otherworldly effects and humanity is achieved, we might be in for a treat.
