However you might feel about Sony making their own Spider-verse movies while Marvel get on with Peter Parker's vacation in the MCU, it's still very exciting that we're finally going to get a Venom movie.

All we've had so far is a shoe-horned-in version of the character in Spider-Man 3, where the will of the director was overlooked by an over-eager studio and the results were inevitably lacking. Let's hope that this stand-alone vision - which will apparently be more like a sci-fi horror - can erase that misstep out of memory completely.

In Tom Hardy the film has a hugely gifted lead and the casting of Michelle Williams is also excellent news, and though director Ruben Fleischer's last outing, Gangster Squad, wasn't great, Zombieland showed incredible potential and a valuable knowledge of the genre.

There really does need to be some allowance for somehow tying him to the MCU though - however that would work.
