40. Alita: Battle Angel

Anything that relies as heavily on CGI as Robert Rodriguez's adaptation of the beloved Gunnm manga is always met with a little trepidation (mostly thanks to the soulless monstrosities like RIPSD and Green Lantern out there), but it shouldn't be used as an indicator of immediate failure.

Alita tells the story of an android seeking the nature of her existence who discovers that she's more than she appears to be - pretty standard sci-fi fare, but with some stunning, idiosyncratic visuals. Unfortunately, it's February release date smacks a little of a graveyard slot dump, but let's hope it's more like Fox realising there's just less competition.

The cast - including Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson - deserves attention and it has the potential to be a cult hit like Valerian if the bonkers promise is delivered on.
