14. Joker

Few people would have argued for a Joker origin movie a couple of years ago as the spectre of Heath Ledger's Mr J hung heavy over DC movie fandom. But the landscape has changed now thanks to Jared Leto's performance in Suicide Squad and the need for difference off the back of that made this film a possibility.

Existing apart from the DCEU (or what remains of it), Todd Phillips' Joker is set in the past and tells the story of the Joker's rise in Gotham (or appears to anyway - don't rule out major deception here) as he clashes with Bruce Wayne's family and the local establishment. It'll apparently take leads from The Man Who Laughs and Scorsese's King Of Comedy and the hiring of Joaquin Phoenix definitely gives it added clout.

Quite how it will deal with the magic of the Joker's mythology remains to be seen (since Solo struggled because it demystified the character too much), but he's the sort of character that fans will flock to the cinema for no matter what he's in.
