1. Emily Blunt Almost Killed Tom Cruise While Filming Edge Of Tomorrow
One of our
favourite blockbusters of this summer - and one which we feel was unfairly overlooked by a lot of audiences and critics - was Edge Of Tomorrow, the sci-fi take on Groundhog Day that finally rehabilitated Tom Cruise after a series of poor decisions, personally and professionally. Adapted from the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill (which is a much, much better title), Edge Of Tomorrow centres on Cruise's spineless army PR guy who gets drafted into a war against alien invaders. He dies straight away, thanks to the overwhelming enemy forces and his lack of training, only to wake up and find himself back at the military base prior to being sent out. From there he discovers that, every time he dies, he reawakens the day before the ill-fated battle against the extraterrestrials. He decides to track down Emily Blunt's war hero who, it turned out, possessed the same power for a bit; so she offers to train him. Which leads to a darkly comic montage where Emily Blunt kills Tom Cruise over and over again, in pursuit of getting him into a fit enough state to turn the tide in the intergalactic war for the good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73FktIOpsJ0 Ironically, Blunt actually did nearly kill Tom Cruise on set. Being responsible for the death of one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the modern age would certainly be an ice breaker at parties, but probably wouldn't do wonders for the English actor's career, as she recounted during an appearance on Conan O'Brien's talk show. During a driving scene with Cruise in the passenger seat Blunt ignored his instructions to break, smashing the vehicle into a tree, with Cruise's side bearing the brunt of the damage. Thankfully Cruise has seen it all, so after seeing his life flash before his eyes "he was actually laughing," said Blunt. "And I told him, I said, I thought you were being so annoying when you told me to say brake, and I apologise."
