Chris Evans and Jenny Slate met in preparation for the 2017 comedy-drama film Gifted. They hit it off immediately and, thanks to their off-screen chemistry, quickly found that they were playing love interests on-screen as well. They entered into what would become an on-again, off-again relationship that lasted for almost a year before splitting just before the movie's release.

Gifted followed the struggle for custody between a young girl's uncle and grandmother. Chris Evans plays Frank, the young girl's uncle, while Jenny Slate plays Bonnie, her teacher. Reviewers called it simple, straightforward but Evans' charm helped sell the film, while his on screen chemistry with Slate sold the romance.

Evans and Slate's off-screen split did little to affect the movie's success at the box office, with receipts of $43 million against a $7 million budget.
