Few trilogies outside of Star Wars can claim to have had the same impact as Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. But, in the same breath, only the Star Wars prequels have proved more divisive than The Hobbit movies which followed.

Even the most avid fans of Gandalf, Bilbo and Gollum have to admit there was a dip in quality between the original films and the more family-friendly prequels, and Jacko has spoken openly about the reasons behind that.

According to his comments in the behind-the-scenes featurette included on the Battle of the Five Armies DVD, the New Zealander revealed time constraints hurt the films.

While the original Lord of the Rings movies took years of planning, Jackson had to dive right into the Hobbit saga with little time for any prep following the abrupt departure of his predecessor in the director's chair Guillermo Del Toro.

Commenting frankly about the prequels, the director admitted that he was "winging it" on set most of the time. It pays not to rush into things, kids.
