Now this one actually offends me as not only is there anything wrong with this film, but it's a personal favourite. It has it all, artificial intelligence and its implications, the iconic character at his best with Christopher Reeve, corporate greed the likes of which gave rise to the GFC, a great inclusion and extension of the pre Superman/Smallville days and it's story arc, Evil Superman vs Superman (by far the greatest scene in any superhero movie) and humour. Yes, humour, and what is wrong with that? Why does everything have to be "uber" serious nowadays (is that the term the kids use nowadays?). All of you adult fan boys always seem to neglect to remember that all of these characters were designed to appeal to children and as such needs a "camp" element involved to make sure they are entertained as children. To which I was as a child. That first sequence is truly awesome. The way it was filmed, the way it is all in sync and as far as slapstick goes, this rivals to glory days of "the 3 Stooges", but without the inherent use of mental illness as a precursor to such events(to which I take offence personally as I have a few issues myself). Did I mention that it starred Richard Pryor, comic genius. His timing in this movie is impeccable & he truly is a great comic foil, unlike Rob Schneider in "Judge Dredd" (shudder). And for people to actually say that he is detrimental to this film is a serious kick to the nut sack to the legacy for this great comic actor. He has great rapport with all of his co stars and funnily, he is actually quite believable as the 80's computer genius he doesn't realize he is. If Bill Gates got seduced by an evil corporate entity with an idea for World Domination other than country size profits, who knows what might of happened when Windows XP was released. Understandably it would have been nice if the studio and Richard Donner could have just gotten along and gave us the original trilogy under his complete direction, who knows what may have come out of that. But as it stands Superman 3, for all of the problems it went thru in getting made, is a strong edition and one of the better ones in the current bloated climate of superhero films. And as for my personal opinion, far better an inclusion to the Superman mythos that was Man of Steel, which completely misses the point about Superman in every way and has Kevin Costner NOT being saved from a tornado. Even Superman, The Quest for Peace managed to nail the tone Superman is meant to set more so than that film, and I will go to the grave saying that the concept for "Quest for Peace" was sound, just executed horribly.
Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life????
