6 Crazy Lord Of The Rings Theories (And Why They Might Be True)

1. Gandalf Wanted To Use The Eagles All Along

The role of the eagles is probably the most contented topic throughout Tolkein’s lore.

While many question why the eagles couldn’t have taken the ring or fellowship to Mordor, others dispel it with a simple ‘Sauron would have seen them and stopped it’ or ‘Because it’s not their job’. However there is good evidence to suggest that Gandalf intended that the Fellowship use the eagles all along.

The obvious support to this claim is the dying words of Gandalf the Grey, "Fly you fools." While it probably means 'GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE', was there an extra intention in the words of the wizard? It’s possible that Gandalf had planned with the eagles to have them fly the fellowship to Mordor, with their only chance of survival being the element of secrecy, surprise and the hope that the Nazgul were elsewhere searching.

The mines of Moria weren’t the ideal route for the fellowship to take, but they were secret. It was incredibly risky to plan for the Eagles to enter Mordor and allow Frodo to cast the ring into the lava of Mount Doom, but is it riskier than having two Hobbits complete the impossible journey of penetrating Mordor?
