6 Major Concerns From Ready Player One Trailer

5. The Writing Team

Ready Player One Iron Giant
Warner Bros

When looking at the screenwriting team, it's worth noting the relative lack of actual screenwriting experience between the two.

Zak Penn, while credited for story credits throughout the years, doesn't have much experience when it comes to screenplays. Worse yet, when he DID do them, it was for films like X-Men 3, Elektra, and The Incredible Hulk.

Ernest Cline obviously wrote the book, but considering that also had its problems, it's unclear if the movie can avoid the same issues.

The book, out of necessity, was filled with exposition in which the world was explained from the protagonist's perspective. This is where RPO can improve on the source material as it has the option of visual storytelling. However, considering Zak Penn was brought in to rewrite the initial script penned by Erik Eason and Cline, it's possible that Cline was already having troubles with the script and with Penn's own struggles with solo screenwriting, the screenplay is by no means a certainty.

Zak Penn has been a part of strong writing teams (albeit they were for the 'story' rather than 'screenplay' credits) and Cline definitely has shown charm in his writing, so it's still very possible that this duo ends up beating expectations and offering audiences a deeper experience than initially expected.
