6 Major Concerns From Ready Player One Trailer

3. Far Too Familiar Themes And Story

Ready Player One Iron Giant
Warner Bros

At the beginning of the trailer, the story set-up of an all-out treasure hunt in a massive digital space sounds unique and fresh.

Yet, halfway through the trailer, it becomes a story of rebellion and fighting 'The Man,' leading to the teased story coming across as far more familiar than it should. When you think about how Wade's background and story lead-in is like an amalgamation of several other rags-to-riches stories (primarily Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka), the lack of innovative storytelling begins to wear down the appeal.

As more plot details come out, it seems this reference-filled homage to nerd culture has a relatively standard core, especially with the antagonist being a part of an evil corporation that only wants to control the Oasis and all of its players.

This story could be something pretty unique if they play their cards right, but they need to be willing to be unfamiliar and different. So far, it seems that this tale may follow a well-treaded (but heavily reference-filled) path.
