6 Minor Details That Will Help Make Star Wars: Episode VII Not Suck

2. Ducks

Ducks "If we don't get the shield generator fixed, we'll be sitting ducks." That is a real line of dialog, spoken by a character named Captain Panaka, in a spaceship, while fleeing the planet Naboo, in a galaxy far, far away, where they also have ducks. Ducks now have their own page on Wookiepedia, the Star Wars Wiki, because whoever runs it was watching Episode I and was like "Wait... did he just say.... Ah, crap." My issue isn't with the ducks. I'm just trying to reiterate that attention to detail is very important when creating a fantasy universe, and Star Wars, though it takes place in space, is very much fantasy. Little things like Han Solo telling Luke, "You look strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark" remind us that this universe is filled with incredible, wondrous, dangerous creatures. You hear that line and you're like, "Cool! What's a gundark?! I bet they're nasty little critters with huge ears that aren't anything like ducks!" The irony is that hearing Captain Panaka mention ducks, which are real, make it seem fake, while hearing Han Solo talk about gundarks, which are fake, make the universe seem more real. So remember, J.J., the story is what's going to make your Star Wars movie great, but the details are what's going to make it cool. Oh, and one last thing...
