5. The Punisher

The Punisher has had three films to his name at this point and none of them have been any good. At all. They€™re probably worse than Judge Dredd, Spawn and The Spirit combined. Well, maybe. Three different actors have played Frank Castle so far, and the fact that Dolph Lundgren was the first should tell you how criminally mistreated the character has bee. Castle would certainly have a few words to say to the movie executives behind the films. In the Civil War books, Frank turns up on the doorstep of Captain America€™s secret base fairly late in the game, having rescued Spider-Man from government sponsored villains and presenting his fellow soldier with the stolen plans for the prison that Tony Stark has had built in the Negative Zone. The presence of an unstable, gun-toting vigilante unsettles the more virtuous heroes, especially when Castle shoots dead two villains who were aiding the rebel heroes, leading to a scrap with Cap in which The Punisher refuses to fight back against his idol. Whilst Castle€™s presence is arguably pretty inessential to the overall plot, Spider-Man€™s comment that Rogers probably inspired him and that they are €˜the same guy, different war€™ chimes well with the inspiration and consequence angle that is likely to be entirely absent from the MCU€™s Civil War. Still, it€™s not like The Punisher won€™t be getting any love next year, as he€™ll be popping up during the second season of Netflix€™s Daredevil, which will probably be released roughly around the same time as Civil War is in cinemas.
