2. Toy Story (1995): Woody and Buzz
Like probably a good portion of film fans, this is my all time favorite animated film series: I love them all, and they do almost everything right. However... do I really believe the chemistry between Woody and Bo Beep or even Buzz and Jesse? Not so much. This film is so great in so many ways, but when it tries to do romance, at then end of the day it is only as convincing and emotionally gripping as when you played weddings with your teddies when you were younger... because at the end of the day, that is really all we are seeing, and these toys simply can not have sex for obvious reasons... so sexual chemistry (or chemistry of any kind) doesn't exist for them. Regardless, they still attempt this, and for all those who would argue that sexual relationships and sexual orientations don't belong in children movies, may I remind you that heterosexual relationships have existed and been presented (with quite a few sexual metaphors and suggestions- Buzz's wings popping up when he sees Jesse for example) in pretty much every animated movie ever made. So, I'm really only having a bit of fun with this one, though I don't see any good reason why not. It's about time something like this happened in a Pixar film (
I have written an article on the subject for WhatCulture) if you ask me, and Buzz and Woody would make great boyfriends. Woody spends most of the first film jealous of Buzz... maybe there is a more complex reason for this? Maybe Woody is jealous that Buzz isn't giving him enough attention? OK, so I'm looking for things in this film that perhaps don't exist, but it would at least get people talking if it did, and like I said before... why not?
