6 Movie Characters Who Were Just Too Damn GOOD To Die

4. Dr Ian Malcolm - Jurassic Park

When you think back, the idea of Dr Ian Malcolm being killed off in Jurassic Park makes no sense. On the back of his role in The Fly, Jeff Goldblum's casting effectively made him the spokesperson against human scientific over-reaching and that seemed to be the role the mathematician was taking in the film.

It might come as a surprise, then, to learn that Goldblum was supposed to be killed in the T-Rex attack that sees him attempt to save the kids. In the novel, Malcolm is rescued from the aftermath of the attack, but is gravely injured and spends the book slowly dying, but Steven Spielberg had other ideas.

Clearly buoyed by Goldblum's charisma and the need to balance the morale of his audience by keeping the right characters alive, he rightly foresaw Malcolm's popularity and gave him a reprieve. He got better so well that he managed to transform into a full-blooded action hero for the sequel, in fact.
