6 Movie Characters Who Were Just Too Damn GOOD To Die
5. Dewey - Scream
Sometimes, you just can't stomp the puppy, no matter how firmly it's written into the script. That was certainly the case with David Arquette's Dewey in Scream.
Initially, Wes Craven had planned Dewey to be young and silly and for him to be brutally killed by Ghost Face (as cops usually tend to be in horror movies). In fact, every single draft of Craven's script had him being killed and the test screening actually saw his demise too. But the test audiences just couldn't accept Dewey being killed and Craven eventually agreed that he deserved to survive.
Crucially, Dewey surviving also subverted the tropes Scream was so keen to lampoon, throwing in an element of surprise that actually ended up serving the narrative well. And for all the film series' faults, he ended up being one of the more popular characters in it, even if the film-makers reveled in him being stabbed repeatedly.
