6 People Who Stupidly Thought Their Movies Should Win Oscars
5. Vin Diesel Got It Into His Head Fast Five Was In The Oscar Running
For an actor with such notoriety and a fair number of box office hits under his belt, Vin Diesel doesn't half come across as out of touch. He constantly talks about his meatheaded blank slates like Riddick and Xander Cage as cultural icons; being a seasoned D&D player, he's clearly got an incredible imagination, but lacks the acting ability to convey anything he dreams up on screen. The inexplicable success of the Fast And Furious franchise, which, in contrast to ever other movie series ever, only gets more successful as time goes on, almost seems to suggest that he's getting something right; you don't make more than The Avengers without knowing your stuff. But even then he shows a complete misunderstanding of his movies' success. Back when Fast 5 was released (in case you forgot, that's the one that introduces the Rock and had the gang pulling a safe around Rio) he took to success to heart, proclaiming that he "wouldn't be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this". His logic comes from a nice place (he went on to add "sooner or later, people are gonna say, 'Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn't mean they're not great.') and to be fair Fast 5 came out in one of the worst cinema years in recent memory (it was the year Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close was nominated for Best Picture), but to think having lots of cars revving about and making money equals quality? Not having that.
