6 Seedy Horror Films To Blight Your Eyes With

2. Gore Gore Girls (1972)

Gore Gore Girls The seediest, most low life production to come from the direction of H G Lewis and that says a LOT! (this cannot be over emphasised). Everything about it - the hysterical acting, the bloody savage mayhem, the most woeful strippers on the planet, the dapper detective - equals approximately 90 minutes of seediness courtesy of the Godfather of Gore. Even at the end the screen pops up saying "We announce with pride this movie is over". Yes, the film is fully aware of its shoddiness and it positively revels in it. There is a murderer on the loose in a strip club. The murderer carries out gross acts of mutilation on strippers' faces with the camera focusing on the carnage for way longer than is necessary. It is quite disconcerting to watch the violence - even though it is plainly dummy faces and animal innards. A drunken journalist called Amy (who spends most of the movie pissed out of her brain) works alongside Abraham Gentry - the most obnoxious Private Investigator in the world - to solve the mystery. Along the way they encounter a Vietnam vet who enjoyed crushing heads in the war and now carries on this sinister penchant by squashing pieces of fruit with faces drawn on them. There is also the funniest ever movie scene set in a strip club when a radical women's liberation movement storms the stage with cards spouting epithets like "Quit the T*t!". Eventually smart ass Gentry solves the case and we can say good bye and good riddance to the Gore Gore girls. The movie is H G Lewis' utterly appalling but strangely hypnotic swan song (until they coaxed him out of retirement for Blood Feast 2) and remains banned in Australia.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
