Michael Douglas plays a dangerous high-roller who tracks a different kind of prey, in Beyond the Reach. Think Gordon Gekko, with a rifle, in the desert. Adapted from Robb White's 1972 novel Deathwatch, this movie retains all the cinematic hallmarks you'd expect from the time thanks to its deliberate 'throwback' styling, long tense scenes, sweeping panoramas and a refreshingly low amount of special effects. The two main characters spend most of their time on opposite sites of the desert which only adds to the tension, although who wouldn't want to run a mile from Michael Douglas in leather gloves and yellow sunglasses? Beyond the Reach is the perfect antidote to films that have over-plotted their way to the top of the box office; look out for it on Netflix from March 12th.
