6 Things We Can Expect From Suicide Squad 2 With Gavin O'Connor As Director

4. More Complex Relationships Between Squad Members

No matter what genre O'Connor finds himself working in, it's his characters that are always given the most attention, not the events and circumstances that those characters find themselves in.

The Accountant was as much a character study as it was an action-thriller, Jane Got A Gun was a revenge tale with a twisted love triangle set against a Western backdrop, and Warrior was a story about two brothers and their relationship with their estranged father; MMA could've been switched out for virtually any sport.

Suicide Squad had several great character moments that we already mentioned, like the bar scene and Diablo's backstory, but it also spent too much time on things that didn't really matter; the movie made it out like Waller had some secret agenda or mystery plan, but she didn't (or it was never revealed if she did), and you could remove the Joker from the plot entirely and it wouldn't change one bit.

None of these things served the main characters or helped develop them, and that's why the film's story was hit and miss.

O'Connor's movies often lack these inconsequential or self-indulgent elements and only feature material that propels the story forward or fleshes out the characters.

Hopefully, this means that Suicide Squad 2 will be a lot more focused than the first, making for a tighter, more satisfying overall experience.
