5. Her Shorter Hair Matches Her Early Design
While the overall costume seems to be an entirely new design, the shorter hair bunches do bear more than a passing resemblance to Harley’s look in The Animated Series. There are all sorts of reasons this may be; a purely aesthetic coincidence, a visual symbol of Harley’s rebirth, a deliberate choice by the director to make her more playful, or something different entirely.
There’s also the fact that Renee Montoya features in the movie, and like Harley she too was first introduced via The Animated series. This makes it much more likely that we’ll get more nods, homages and references to the show throughout the movie.
As for what the bunches mean, there’s not a lot of fun to be had in speculating that it’s just for aesthetics, so let’s put a pin in that. If it’s to reinforce her rebirth away from Joker, that suggests we may get a little more Harleen and a little less Harley, focussing on her breakdown.
Finally, the directorial choice to alter her image fits in more with the earlier points about her costume. Harley has always been sexually confident, but perhaps sailed a little too close to the wind in Suicide Squad.
