6 Underground Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

4. The Tone Is All Over The Place

This is another frequent problem with Michael Bay's movies, albeit one that's usually ironed out by the PG-13 rating.

However, like the similarly R-rated Pain and Gain, 6 Underground just doesn't have a consistent tonality or mood throughout.

One minute we're watching innocent bystanders get ripped apart by vehicles and machine gun fire, and the next the gang is dressing up in silly disguises for their next mission and dropping inane wise-cracks.

It adds up to a film that feels both mean and daft at the same time, which is odd and more than a little offputting. It doesn't help that the gory action is so flippant that it has no weight to it at all, yet also isn't cartoonish enough to be actually amusing.

Consistency in this regard has never been a strong suit for Bay, though, so it's hardly surprising that this movie is likely to give audiences frequent mood whiplash.
