6 Underground Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
3. It Wastes Its Talented Ensemble Cast
Though it won't surprise anyone that this movie is mostly The Ryan Reynolds Show, Bay has amassed an impressive ensemble cast alongside him, the majority of whom are sadly totally wasted on this material.
Most offensively, the brilliant Mélanie Laurent and Adria Arjona are largely just relegated to eye candy roles, which as the only two significant female characters in the movie, is neither acceptable nor surprising given Bay's track record.
As for the men, the remarkable Corey Hawkins is left stranded with a totally generic tortured soldier character, who is so lacking in personality that the actor regularly disappears into the periphery.
It's easy to see why these actors were attracted to a Michael Bay-sized paycheck, and while nobody expects well-wrought characterisation from a Bay movie, these characters are still painfully bottom-rung, even for this filmmaker's standards.
