6 Unexpected Surprises From Oscars 2014 Nominations

6. Bad Grandpa And The Lone Ranger Got Oscar Nominations

Bad Grandpa Lone Ranger Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is the fourth installment of the Jackass franchise and I'm sure when the film was first announced, hardly anyone thought much of it. Did we really need another Jackass movie? Will people want to see a movie revolving entirely around Johnny Knoxville wearing old man makeup? Well, the answer turned out to be a resounding yes as it grossed over $145 million worldwide. These Jackass movies make money, folks, there's no way around it. And now this film has marched its way into Oscar history by earning a nomination for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. The man responsible for the grandpa makeup, Stephen Prouty, has worked on big time Hollywood films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Thor and he's never been nominated for an Oscar before. He's been in the business since the early '90s; I bet he never thought he would finally get recognition from the Academy by doing a Jackass movie. Another surprise is The Lone Ranger, which was largely panned by critics when it first came out and did middling business around the world. Sure, normally, a $260 million worldwide intake would be great for a normal film, but The Lone Ranger's budget is estimated to be at close to $250 million. While two Oscar nominations (Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects) does not put more money in the producers' pockets, could it at least heal some open wounds? Probably not.
