6 Ups & 7 Downs From Independence Day: Resurgence

4. It's A Rare Blockbuster With A Reasonable Runtime

These days it feels like most big summer tentpoles are mandated to clock in at around 140-150 minutes in length, and as a viewer it can prove frequently exhausting.

So few movies have a good enough story to tell for that runtime, and so the end product often feels excessive and bloated, but at least you can't really say that for Resurgence.

Refreshingly, it clocks in at an even 120 minutes (or about 110 minutes minus credits), making it a good 25 minutes shorter than the original film and considerably less of a chore to watch than so many of today's big-budget blockbusters.

Yes, the first act is still a slog and it does feel quite rushed overall, but there's a lot to be said for a huge movie that doesn't over-extend itself with a punishing run-time.
