Before all the action kicks off, the audience is forced to deal with a first reel that's basically a colossal bore. Emmerich and his committee of writers mistakenly believe that we're interested in anything more than the over-the-top set-pieces, and so double down on a ton of dull build-up instead of just getting straight to the meat of the matter.
Though what follows is undeniably entertaining, the movie's opening is straight-up boring at times, and will make repeat viewings a bit of a challenge without just skipping to the 35 minute mark, in all honesty.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
