6 Ups & 7 Downs From Independence Day: Resurgence

6. Incredibly Bland New Characters

Part of the reason the movie's opening is so flaccid is that it introduces us to a host of new characters, almost none of whom are remotely interesting or especially likable. There's Liam Hemsworth's handsome dullard, Jessie Usher as Will Smith's wooden step-son, William Fichtner getting about five minutes of screen time as a General who does basically nothing, Charlotte Gainsbourg as a scientist whose sole purpose is to be Jeff Goldblum's love interest, and Sela Ward's President who does little more than order missiles to be fired.

That's without even mentioning the criminal waste of the brilliant Maika Monroe as former-President Whitmore's daughter, cementing how the movie has assembled a rock solid cast and, outside of the classic characters, done very little with them.

The script does very little to make us care about the newbies, because what passes for character development is typically a line or two of expository dialogue here and there, and there's very little chance you'll even remember any of their names once it's all said and done.
