Perhaps it's just a general Hollywood cynicism that promotes this sort of feeling nowadays, but there are two Chinese characters in the movie who stick out like sore thumbs, simply because it feels like the film is pandering to the extremely lucrative Chinese movie market.
Chin Han appears as the grumpy leader of the Chinese Space Squadron for a few minutes here and there, while Angelababy, one of the country's most famous model-actresses, plays a bada** fighter pilot who, again, shows up occasionally.
Maybe the movie just wanted a little diversity in its cast, or maybe it knew that casting one of China's most recognisable faces would do its box office plenty of favours. Every time they're on screen, though, the distracting thought arises, yet it remains to be seen whether their presence will actually have paid off.
