Though Roland Emmerich could create cinematic destruction porn in his sleep at this point in his career, it's a shame that the movie on the whole is kind of a mess.

Sure, the set-pieces deliver the goods, but there's a lot of awkwardness in terms of the way almost everything else is put together: scenes skip around frantically without much warning, reaction shots seem totally off (probably because they were filmed on separate days or something), and there's the distinct feeling that the film was probably a struggle to cobble together in post-production.
