7 Acclaimed Recent Movies Everyone Will Turn On

2. Love, Simon

The Acclaim: Lavished with praise for being the first major studio film to focus on a gay teenage romance, Love, Simon's cast and screenplay were credited with delivering a heartfelt coming-of-age drama with an exceptionally important message.

Why Everyone Will Hate It: Though Love, Simon is an encouraging step in the right direction for gay representation in the teen romance genre, one suspects the film will end up feeling positively quaint in the future when representation ramps up significantly.

After all, the film's plot is extremely stock at the end of the day, borrowing liberally from several decades of high school movies, but with a gay twist, of course!

In another 10 or 15 years, when gay high school comedies are presumably more widespread, Love, Simon will be probably seem rather simplistic and unambitious. It'll have its place in history, sure, but that's it.
