7 Awesome James Bond Fan Theories That Actually Improve The Films
3. John Mason Is James Bond
Michael Bay's 1996 smash hit The Rock stars Connery as an incarcerated ex-British spy, locked up for decades after being caught with compromising intelligence regarding J. Edgar Hoover. FBI director Womack describes the character, John Mason, as "a British national, incarcerated on Alcatraz in 1962 escaped in 63," a timeline which matches up almost perfectly with Connery's early '60s portrayal of the Bond character. Are the two characters one and the same? The film actually makes quite a few throwaway references to the Bond series, even giving Connery, in response to Nicolas Cage's introduction as Stanley Goodspeed, the familiar one-liner, "but of course you are," just as he had quipped decades prior in Diamonds Are Forever. Even if the similarities are coincidental, the film's writers were at least aware of the characters' parallels. With a little streamlining, this theory could tie-in with the previous one, spotlighting Connery's Bond and his escapades following life at MI6.
