What's the first thing you think of when somebody mentions the Portal video game series? Chances are the word "GLaDOS" is running your head right now, given that the character is pretty much the best thing about the game and its sequel. GLaDOs, the rampant A.I. who sets out to destroy you and later on becomes an unlikely ally, was voiced by actress Ellen McLaine, who pretty much is GLaDOs. Truth is, GLaDOS only works because of the temperament that McLaine brings to her performance - at once, she's both terrifying and hilarious, which - you'll agree - is an immensely difficult task to pull off using your voice alone. When it came to casting the voice for the in-built A.I. system in Pacific Rim's gigantic Jaeger Gipsy Danger, then, director Guillermo del Toro sought out Ellen McLaine. Yep:
that's why the A.I. sounded so much like GLaDOS.
