7 Awesome Movies With Bittersweet Endings

6. (500) Days of Summer

500-days Hailed upon release as the best romantic comedy since Annie Hall, '(500) Days of Summer' was certainly unique. It tells the story of a romance lasting 500 days between Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), albeit in a non-linear narrative. The film jumps around to various points throughout their relationship, indicating what day it is with a caption on the screen. The film eventually comes around to the point every romantic comedy features at some point... the breakup. Quite a while later, they run into each other once again at a friend's wedding. They dance, talk (and Summer catches the bouquet), they ride together on the way home, and she even invites him to a party at her apartment! Things are looking up! Well, until Tom notices an engagement ring on her finger. He becomes distraught and leaves the party. He enters a depression and quits his job. The Bittersweet Ending: He finally sees her once again when he goes to a park bench and sits down, and she calls to him. She approaches and sits with him, and learns that she's now married. They talk for a good five minutes, and the scene ends with a shot of her now ringed hand holding his. Okay, how could this possibly be happy? How does one be happy after losing Zooey Deschanel? Well, the movie's closing scene shows Tom going to a job interview where he meets a woman applying for the same job. He asks her what her name is, and she replies "Autumn". Tom looks into the camera and grins, as the caption showing the number of days switches from 500 to 1.
