7 Bizarre Cinematic Universes That Are Actually Happening
2. Kaiju Cinematic Universe
Last year, Legendary Pictures announced that a sort of King Kong prequel subtitled Skull Island was in the works, which will reportedly deal with the untold origins of the infamous giant gorilla, whilst detailing where he got his infatuation with blondes. There's a good chance it could work out fine, of course, but it's also been hinted that Skull Island is the first step in an upcoming cinematic universe of gargantuan proportions - one that could find itself tied to the rebooted Godzilla franchise, which Legendary Pictures also produced. That's right: a "kaiju" cinematic universe. With that in mind, then, it looks to be pretty obvious what's happening here: the studio are gearing up for another King Kong Vs. Godzilla picture, because this is the world that you live in now. Though the idea has an inherently awesome appeal, it also feels kind of unnecessary, too: do audiences really need everything to be part of a cinematic universe? When does it end? That goes doubly so when you consider the relative non-success of a movie like Pacific Rim, which seemed poised for box office glory but failed to attract a wide audience haul.
