4. Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist (2005)

Here's a movie that wants to be a prequel so badly that it put the word in its title. You know, just in case you got confused or something.
Dominion also bills itself as an "alternative" prequel to
The Exorcist - whatever that's supposed to mean, I have no idea. From what I can gather, you just watch it and decide afterwards whether or not it ruined the original movie for you. If it did, you're allowed to disregard it. Anyway, the story takes place many years before that of the original, good movie, with Father Merrin (played by Stellan Skarsgard, would you believe?) on a mission to dig up an old church that harbours some kind of ancient evil. Bizarrely, Paul Schrader directed this movie. Paul Schrader, who wrote
Taxi Driver and
Raging Bull, directed a movie with "Prequel To The Exorcist" in its title. It is, sadly, a failure on every conceivable level. Avoid it like you'd avoid any movie that has to let you know it's a prequel on the poster.
