Many people thought that it would be a long time before another movie would enjoy a debut weekend north of $200m at the domestic box office, given that The Avengers was nothing short of a pop culture phenomenon. However, as the old saying goes; records are meant to be broken. Still, it came as something as a shock when Jurassic World set a new benchmark with a stunning $208.8m bow.

Analysts were initially predicting that the movie had a real shot at taking the previous June opening of $116.6m set by Man of Steel, but these projections were being hurriedly rewritten when Jurassic World enjoyed the third-biggest Friday debut in history with $82m, before taking the record for highest-grossing Saturday and Sunday to finish out the weekend as the undisputed king of the domestic box office, overtaking three Marvel Studios features (Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron and The Avengers) in the process to take the domestic opening weekend record.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
