7 Classics From The 1980s That Surprisingly Weren't Big At The Box Office

2. Say Anything

Possibly the most spoofed image from an 80s movie comes via Say Anything, with Lloyd holding his boom box while Peter Gabriel sings on. It was a grittier high school romance than John Hughes gave us. There were serious characters and serious flaws. However, the idea of two different types of people trying to make it work was timeless. Except in its own time, when it kicked up only $20.8 million (worth $39.63 million today), which put it outside the top 50 of 1989. In fact, it finished 422nd in the decade, behind Xanadu, Benji the Hunter, and The Care Bears Movie. Burlesque made about as much money as Say Anything, which is like finding out that Lloyd got a job buying and selling processed items.

I like to be thought of as well rounded in my nerdom. Film, sports, geocaching, podcasting and board games all tickle my fancy. When it comes to movies, I like to look at older films and compare eras.
