What Put Him On The Map: 2010's Monsters What He's On Now: 2014's Godzilla Made for less than a million bucks, Gareth Edwards' sci-fi monster flick brought home over 4 times that much at the box office, despite being released in only 25 theaters in America. A wonderful, slow-burn film by most accounts (I have yet to see it, though it's been on my watch-list for what seems like forever), Monsters features effective low-budget FX and solid performances from some real buzz-worthy stars. It seemed inevitable, then €“ given their track-record of glomming on to anything original €“ that Hollywood would catch wind of the word "monster" and come calling with a monster of their own... well, sort of. At the beginning of 2011, the British director was snatched up to helm the story of Japan's most well-known Kaiju, a story which just had to be told... again. What do we start calling remakes of remakes, do-overs? All kidding and distain for Hollywood aside, Godzilla is more of a franchise character than just a single movie, and that '98 flick really was awful. The new Godzilla (slated for a May 2014 release here in the States) has impressed so far with a "must watch" trailer, and the film features a good many top-notch character actors including Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and Elizabeth Olsen.
