7 Deeply Unsettling Unanswered Questions In Kids' Movies

3. Toy Story 3 - What Teenage Horrors Have Woody & Buzz Witnessed?

The Toy Story series is quite possibly the most popular and successful series of movies in the Disney universe. Admittedly, that's not overly difficult, as the majority of their sequels are nonsensical and direct to DVD, but the point still stands. The third instalment of the franchise is guaranteed to make you cry like the puny little girl we all are deep down inside, no matter if you're a man, woman, young, old or just the aforementioned little girl. The film tackles the issue of what happens to toys who have a mind of their own when their owner grows up and plays with them less and less, and is easily one of the deepest themes ever explored in a Disney movie. But what is never even hinted upon in the film is just exactly what the toys see as their owner goes through his developmental years. First, there's the depressing angle, where the more infantile toys will have been neglected for years. For example, you already see Wheezey left lying on a shelf, unattended to for years, who eventually becomes so overwhelmed with his fate that he simply chooses not to move even when a human isn't present. Then, there is the dangerous angle, where the toys have to sit through teenage temper tantrums, which would almost certainly include at least one violent expression of rage towards one of the unfortunate playthings in a hissy fit. And then, of course, there is the horrifying angle. Now I don't really want to go into this, but teenage years are a difficult time for boys: they discover girls, go through changes and their brains are more or less entirely wired to one purpose, and it's not pretty. What if Woody and Buzz happen to have been placed in a manner which means they cannot look away as their owner does something particularly... unchild-like...? It barely bears thinking about.
