7 Deeply Unsettling Unanswered Questions In Kids' Movies
2. Aladdin - Does The Genie Create A Country To Be Ruled Over?
I understand entirely that Aladdin is not solidly based in the realms of possibility, as it includes amongst other things, a genie in a lamp and a woman with a waist that could snap if she sneezed. But there is one issue which has been bandied around the circles of the internet for years, and it is most definitely a valid one. When Aladdin wishes the genie to make him a prince, the genie obliges, however, he also creates an entire parade to announce Aladdin's entrance; a parade which is manned by very real people. These people appear to be serving Aladdin, given their roles as horn players, banner bearers, gold carriers and others. So this begs the question: did the Genie conjure an entire country of people simply to be ruled over by Aladdin? All the aforementioned paraders have been materialised by the Genie, and on the whole appear to be emotionless followers of their leader. They have, in short, been thrust into existence for the sole purpose of being ruled over by an unelected leader. What's even more troubling is that these people must live somewhere, so therefore, the Genie must have also created a country, otherwise what is it that Aladdin is prince of, exactly? The sudden appearance of a country would be a tricky enough dilemma in the first place, but when you consider that the story is set in the Middle East, a place which doesn't have the best track record with border disputes to begin with, and you start to worry. And what's more, at the end of the film and at the culmination of his antics, does Aladdin act responsibly and watch over his public? It would appear that once his identity is made clear to the princess, he drops the idea of being a prince entirely, which does not bode well for the future of his newly founded country. Surely these people are doomed to a leaderless and chaotic future, plagued by infighting as contenders emerge above the rest in search of control and personal glory.
